Hey everyone! My name is Shena Rapinan (I am the girl on the right). I am currently a Sophomore attending Santa Teresa High School in San Jose. I attend the program called SMASH (Summer Math and Science Honors Academy). I am a second year (as you can see in my general info I think). This year, in my opinion, is very intense. Then again no pain, no gain right? In many words, I am: clean, likes large parties, outgoing, makes friends easily, optimistic, positive, social, high self control, traditional, assertive, rarely irritated, self revealing, open, finisher, high self concept, controlling, rarely worries, tough, likes to stand out, does not like to be alone, semi neat freak, fearless, dominant, trusting, organized, resolute, strong, practical, craves attention, adventurous, hard working, respects authority, brutally honest, realist, and last but not least, altruistic. My family and friends are the most dearest to me -- they're always on top. My passion are dancing and singing. For hobbies, I enjoy playing the piano, learning to play the guitar, and shopping. If I'm not doing any of the above, I am on the computer, listening to music, hitting the books, or simply just wandering around letting curiousity take its place. What can I say, I am an open person. Right now, I am currently in my Tech class upadating this profile. It's fun getting to update our profiles and such. I chose this class because I want to further my knowledge about technology -- more specifically, digital art, html coding, etc. Although in the past, I have taken two Multimedia Art classes (MA I & MA II) in which I studied Graphic Art designed using computers, etc. In this Tech class, however, I hope to learn more about website designs and html coding. I have some knowledge because I used to be a Tech Intern for JAMsj, but there's always room for improvement.

Allow Me to Introduce Myself:

July 10th, 2007

self-montage1.jpg

Saying it loud and proud, my name is Shena Rapinan. My first name originated from Gaelic/Celtic, and it means God is Gracious. I am a Christian — a believer and follower of God’s teachings and words. I am a full blooded filipino but when looking at me in person, some mistaken me for Vietnamese or Chinese (because of my eyes). I’m not really sure if somewhere along my generation includes a Chinese/Vietnamese blood. Anyway, music and dance is a big part of my life – both were surrounding me as I grew up. I have a knack for cute little things such as teddie bears, roses, and hearts. Cute things like these makes my heart melt. As a little kid, I had many puppies (they are so adorable!) that is why they are included in this montage. Overall, I’m a very happy, outgoing person. Loud sometimes — very nice. At some times, I am just plain clueless. At other times, I’m on top of my game. People just have their moments I guess. All in all though, I know and believe that every meaning of a person’s name is very unique because a name is simply a label that one wears. The personality, the character of the person is what really defines a person’s name — and no one is the same. For that reason, my name is very unique by definition and so if yours too.

My ‘Second Life’

July 5th, 2007

snapshot002.jpg
Hm, so in Tech two days ago (Tuesday) we had to create an avatar that resemble ourselves. Overall, my avatar closely represented what I wore the day I created it. In addition, it is very similar to my body figure. I began to first edit the head of my avatar since it was the hardest for me. My body features were the most easiest to replicate (I don’t know why). The most difficult were my face features and my hair — I couldn’t fully adjust the roundness/length of my face nor find my hairstyle. It was difficult for the most part because the size or my face is in the middle of being round and long; in addititon, my hair is layered: half-short and half-long. I modified at least 90-100 attributes for my avatar. I think a graph should be available to fully replicate my appearance because it would help approximate the replication of myself. Well obviously, my avatar’s appearance reminds me of myself because it was created based on my features.

Hey everyone. I finally have the time to post my photo montage about my community. Here is a PLAIN collage of what my community looks like. There’s the San Jose garden, Tech Museum, Great America, and my school clock tower.

Me, Myself, and the Media

June 26th, 2007

Audio, images, and text are the forms of media that I am frequently exposed to everyday.

As a child I rarely watched television at home. Sure, I would watch movies or cartoons but I didn’t — I sung, danced and played instruments instead. Growing up, I was mostly exposed to music and dance. When I was a child, any graphics and sound I see were fascinating to me. I simply knew these things as pictures or music – ugly or not. I didn’t have internet or a computer then so all experiences with such things were firsthand. I guess this was the first time I came in contact with media but unconsciously. Officially, I believe that the first time I came in contact with these three types of media was when I was about 10 years old in 4th grade. In my class, there were computers in the back of the classroom. The computers were not very high-tech since the technology industry was still in the process of growing. However, they were still functional, yet a bit slow. Usually, during our free time, my classmates and I would turn on the computer and play some games, music, or videos.

I think these media affected me the most and are the most effective even today because it is well advertised and gives entertainment (radion stations, tv channels). Many people today seek these types of media for the sense of serenity. Not only do these media create an atmosphere of relaxation, they are also ‘cool’ meaning they are very popular in many cultures. With audio, I can create messages to communicate with people. Along with it, I can use images to advertise my product to the outside world. Both images and audio are very helpful – they are also very powerful. Using them the right way, I can intertwine images and audio to change the world. I can publish information, news, advertisement, etc. to convince the human society to change the world in a way that I wish as long as I use audio and images in a very appealing way.
