Final Project | Extra Stuff

My interaction with technology and media began at a young age, and has only become more intense with time. My father has a passion for computers, and that is probably part of what got me interested. My first interactive projects were simple, but I have progressed beyond that stage. The main driving force behind my hunger for more knowledge of technology began with a weird spark, and was maintained by an even odder motivation. Communicating with others allowed me to open up my fields of experience, and allowed me to spread the knowledge. After a while of honing my skills, I moved on to the fun stuff, leading me to where I sit now: waiting for my next big project to chase after.

Current things of interest include my website, of which my blog is the most interesting item (in my opinion). I'm involved with smashcast, the podcast for SMASH. Websites I frequent include digg and slashdot.

Assignment One - Personal Profile & Statement: Media & Me

The media and me assignment was a fun experience because it really made me reflect on what I had done with interactive media throughout my life. My mother provided me with the picture of my young self using a Commodore 64, which really got me thinking about how long I had been exposed to media. It all just continues to grow today, and I wonder how deeply entwined with media I will become in the future.

Assignment Two - Montage: What's In A Name?

While working on this montage, I spent a lot of time deciding what to actually include. I had made a rough draft a long time ago, but did not like the outcome at all. This current uploaded one is still not quite how I want it to look, but is better than nothing.

The first image is from the gravesate for my deceased uncle, whom I am named after. Many people wonder why I am "Carlo" and not "Carlos", and that should explain why.

Going counter-clockwise, the next image is looking into an open BART train. I sometimes ride BART to just allow myself time to think, and it usually is quite relaxing.

And then... a box of Honey-Comb, which I sometimes get called. Usually it's something along the line of Honey-Combs, and argh it is annoying.

Next up is one of my flagship computers, Avocado. I will admit that it looks a lot better than it performs, but it still has some sentimental value. It also has some negative emotions tied to it, since the same day it was built, my other computer completely died. LIke, died. I can use its hard drive for science fiction sound effects.

TUX! Do I really need to explain? Well, in case I do: Linux! Windows gets incredibly annoying after a while, and Linux is always there to give me a break. It also runs all my servers, so whee.

A true statement: I am a Geek Inside. One of the employees at Marine World disagreed, but my girlfriend assured her that I really am. Guess it must be true.

Finally, a slightly less noticable addition: the contrating black and white background. My daily life right now is a big mix of good and bad emotions, and I feel this must be represented in my montage. The darker aspects: death, mockery, and having to get away from reality. The better aspects: computers, penguins, and geek status. Together, these things hold together the extremely fragile collection of oddness known as my mind.
