A new addition to the Summer Math & Science Honors Academy,
the Creative
& Interactive Media Lab meets twice a week at Evans Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. Each student comes to class equipped with a laptop and all the necessary software to produce their own personal interactive media projects.
The class is lead by Trevor Parham & Simon Robertson, who teach a group of 20 high school students from various schools from around the San Francisco Bay Area (and beyond). Equipped with the tools they've used to further their own professional & artistic careers, the two instructors guide the class through the world of interactive media using a class website, laptops, design software, a digital camera, a digital video camera, and an LCD projector.
Within the class website, each student is provided with a personal profile page displaying the projects they've completed in class as well as a brief description of how they hope to use these skills and their creative intuition to help them in the future. Whether in college, the workplace, or just their bedroom, this class of students will be equipped with the creative skills & professional tools to produce a variety of media projects, communicating messages of personal significance.
Macromedia Flash, Adobe Photoshop, and Macromedia Dreamweaver are the primary software programs the class will employ to create graphics, websites, and interactive games. Using these programs, they will not only learn basic design principles, but will also benefit from the unique Code/Design feature offered by both Macromedia programs, allowing the students to understand the synergistic relationship between programming and creative expression.
